Do you ever make New Year’s resolutions only to see them flop a few months or even weeks later? Are you making resolutions only to keep up with the holiday traditions?
If you answered yes to either of these questions, then you’re not alone. In fact, it happens to most people. Why you ask? Well, because manifesting your dreams is not as easy as 1-2-3. Manifesting is a lot more than just “wishful” thinking. It’s a lot more than making a wish at 12:00 AM on New Year’s or on your birthday.
Manifesting takes a lot of inner work, outer work, willpower, and faith. These things are present in all of us. The problem is, we’re not aware of them. Or better yet, we don’t necessarily know how to tap into our “inner” power and true potential.
Here are 5 actionable tips to help you set goals and make things happen. They are based on a combination of my own personal experience, spiritual practice, and significant readings that I will share with you as well.

1. Decide what you want
Decide what you want, and be very clear about it. This is an unskippable step. You can’t expect someone to give you what you want if you don’t know what that is yourself. If you don’t enter the right address (destination) into a GPS, then you can’t expect it to give you the right directions to get to where you want. You’ll be running around lost and wondering why you’re not getting there.
When I say be clear about it, I mean be very specific. For instance, “I want to be rich” is too general because “rich” can mean different things to different people. So perhaps you start by deciding what “rich” means to you. Does it mean having enough money to pay your bills on time? Travel the world? Own a mansion? Give to charity? Once you know this, you can narrow down your desire to something like this:
I want to make enough money to travel the world…
I want to make enough money to be able to support my family…
I want to make enough money to give to my favorite charity…
To do:
Decide what you want, and be very specific about it.
Write it down in a piece of paper (A journal or notebook), not your phone.
2. Resolve inner conflicts
Once you’ve decided what you want, you must find and resolve inner conflicts.
Inner conflicts are conflicting thoughts and beliefs about what you’re asking for. I first learned about inner conflicts from motivational speaker and coach Tony Robbins. It made so much sense and explained so much about why some things weren’t happening for me.
For instance, let’s say that you want to make enough money to travel the world. This is your desire. However, growing up you were brought up to believe that abundance is hard to come by, that you need to put in lots of hours of hard labor, or that monetary wealth is evil, etc… Your belief is that from where you stand, abundance is impossible. This is a conflicting belief. It creates resistance and prevents you from getting what you want.
Now let’s say that you’ve just applied for a job. On your way back from the interview you start to think about how the commute is terrible, how you dislike the manager, how the job isn’t perfectly in line with your goals. These are conflicting thoughts. You may end up getting the job, but chances are you’ll be unhappy and eventually drained and stressed out.
To-do:
Meditate on how you really feel about what you’re asking for.
Find your inner conflicts
Write them down, use a journal or notebook.
3. Set goals
“A dream without a plan is just a wish”
Now that you’ve decided what you want and solved your inner conflicts, it’s time to plan things out and set achievable goals.
The best way to set goals is to start from the top down. In other words, begin with the end in mind. Let’s say that your desire is to improve your health by being more physically active. Your long term goal could be that:
Within a year you’ll be able to run 30 miles. This is your long-term goal.
Now, you want to break this down further into mini goals:
1-year goal = run 30 miles
90-day goal = increase mileage by 7.5
1 month goal = increase mileage by 2.5
Weekly goal = increase mileage by .6
1-day goal = increase mileage by .1 (taking one day off)
So your starting point will be to be able to run .6 miles within one week. So, on day one you you’ll run .1 miles, on day .2 miles, and so on…
This may not be enough to some of you but this is just to give you an idea.
To-do:
Based on your desire, set one long-term goal
Break it down into mini goals. You can even start at 5 years, then 1-year…
Be sure to write this down.
4. Take action
“Faith is taking the first step, even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Martin Luther King Jr.
Now that you got your plan, it’s time to execute it. In other words, you have to take action! Otherwise, don’t even think about getting any results, and don’t even think about whining about it either. Take the first step and forget about the rest of the stairs.
To-do:
Start with your one-day goal.
At the end of each day, use a journal to write down what you did to achieve that goal.
Write down as much as you can, what you liked, didn’t like, what you learned, etc…
Repeat at the end of the week, month, 90-day, one-year…
5. Allow
This is the step where most people call it quits. Allowing means that you understand that everything is a process. That success is not possible without a few bumps and failures along the way. These failures are lessons and stepping stones that get you closer to your goal.
Allowing doesn’t mean to sit around and do nothing. It means that you embrace the journey and accept everything that comes your way.
A lot of times we try something and then quit shortly after because we don’t believe we’re good enough. We translate these little failures into not being capable of achieving our dreams. But in reality, we just need to learn from them and keep going.
So let’s say that there’s a task that you don’t know how to do. What a lot of people do here is quit because they think they’re not capable. So what do you do when you don’t know how to do something? Figure it out. With so much information on the internet these days, not knowing how to do something is not even an excuse anymore.
To-do:
Embrace the bumps and bruises along the way
Don’t quit.
There you go. Follow these actionable steps to help you manifest your dreams and achieve your goals. You don’t need to wait for the New Year.
