This is a body scan meditation to calm the body and mind and induce sleep. Body scanning is used in Yoga Nidra practices to develop a state of deep relaxation that takes the practitioner into a hypnagogic state. This practice can be done on your bed, while sitting on a plane, train, or bus, or anytime you need to destress the mind and body.
For instance, there are times when I feel a little anxious or overly energized before bed. Or, I may want to go to sleep faster if I need to wake-up extra early. I cases like this, I do the body scanning on myself (mentally since I already know the sequence) and I’m usually out before I can even finish. Of course, everyone is different. In cases of severe insomnia, one may need to do the rotation more than once or twice.
